One of the most frequent concerns with press-on nails is how to remove them without damaging your natural nails. Good news: if you follow the right method, removal is painless, quick, and causes no damage. Here’s everything you need to know.
Why should you never force removal?
The first rule is absolute: never pull off or force a fake nail. By forcing it, you risk taking off the superficial layers of your natural nail, which leads to thin, ridged, and weakened nails. This is the main cause of damaged nails after using false nails—not the product itself, but brutal removal.
Always take the time to remove your nails properly. 15 minutes of patience will save you weeks of weakened nails.
Method 1 — Removal with glue: warm soapy water
If you applied your press-on nails with the glue included in your MB Beauty kit, here is the gentlest and most effective method:
- Fill a bowl with warm (not boiling) water and add a few drops of mild soap
- Soak your fingers for 10 to 15 minutes—the heat and soap will gradually soften the glue
- Gently test by lifting the side edge of the nail with the cuticle stick included in your kit
- If the nail still resists, soak for an additional 5 minutes—never force it
- Once the glue is softened, gently slide the nail from the base to the tip
- Clean any glue residue with the cuticle stick
Method 2 — Removal with gel pads: lift from the edge
Removal with gel pads is even simpler because the adhesive is less powerful than glue:
- Gently slide the cuticle stick under the side edge of the nail
- Make a slight lever motion to gradually lift the adhesive
- Slide the nail sideways rather than pulling it upwards
- The gel pad detaches cleanly without leaving any residue
If the nail resists, lightly moisten the edge with a little warm water before trying again.
Method 3 — Cuticle oil (for gentle removal)
If you don't have time to soak your fingers, cuticle oil is an effective alternative. Apply a few drops of oil under the edge of each nail and wait 5 minutes. The oil seeps under the adhesive and facilitates detachment. This method is particularly gentle on fragile natural nails.
What to do after removal?
Once your press-on nails are removed, take care of your natural nails:
- Gently file the surface if any glue residue remains—never scratch with a hard object
- Moisturize your nails and cuticles with a nourishing oil or cream
- Let your natural nails breathe for 24 to 48 hours before reapplying new press-on nails, if possible
- Avoid acetone remover—it is not necessary with MB Beauty press-ons and unnecessarily dries out the natural nail
How to store your press-on nails for reuse?
If you used the gel pads, your press-on nails are reusable multiple times. After removal:
- Clean the inside of each nail with an alcohol pad to remove adhesive residue
- Store them in their MB Beauty box, maintaining size order
- Avoid exposing them to heat or humidity, which could deform the press-on nails
With proper care, an MB Beauty kit applied with gel pads can be reused 3 to 5 times.
Do press-on nails really damage nails?
No—provided they are removed correctly. MB Beauty press-on nails do not require prior buffing and do not contain acetone. The only risk to your natural nails comes from forceful or rushed removal. Follow the methods described in this article, and your natural nails will remain healthy and strong.
