It's one of the most frequently asked questions we receive at MB Beauty: can you play sports with press-on nails? The short answer is yes – but with some precautions depending on the type of sport. Here's everything you need to know to stay active without sacrificing your manicure.
Sports compatible without special precautions
The vast majority of sports activities are completely compatible with press-on nails applied with MB Beauty glue:
- Yoga and Pilates — no problem, movements are gentle and controlled
- Running and power walking — your hands are not used, perfect hold
- Cycling and spinning — compatible, just avoid gripping the handlebars too tightly
- Dance — fully compatible, nails even add elegance to movements
- Fitness and light cardio — no problem if you avoid exercises that heavily involve the hands
Sports that require precautions
Some activities put more strain on your hands and can reduce the hold of your nails:
- Weightlifting and CrossFit — weights and bars create friction. Wear sports gloves to protect your nails and avoid very long styles that can snag
- Tennis, padel, and squash — racquet vibrations and sudden movements can dislodge nails. Opt for glue rather than gel pads and choose a short style
- Climbing — long press-on nails are not recommended. Short style with glue only
- Martial arts and combat sports — very short style is mandatory, glue is essential
- Gymnastics — handstands can dislodge nails. Glue and short style recommended
Swimming and water sports
Water is the main enemy of press-on nail adhesion. For swimming and water sports:
- Always use glue — gel pads soften quickly in water
- Wait at least 2 hours after application before entering the water
- Chlorinated pool water is particularly harsh — rinse your hands with fresh water after each session
- Seawater is even harsher — dry your hands thoroughly after each swim
- For long pool sessions, consider swimming gloves if you want maximum hold

What length to choose for sports?
The length of your nails directly influences their compatibility with sports:
- Short style → the most versatile, compatible with almost all sports, no discomfort
- Medium style → compatible with most gentle to moderate activities
- Long style → reserve for activities without hand contact — running, cycling, dancing
For active sportswomen, we recommend our short styles like Fauve Nude, Voile Ambré or Gris Lune — elegant and practical for everyday wear.
Glue or gel pads for sports?
For any sports activity, glue is always preferable to gel pads. Glue offers much superior adhesion that resists sweat, friction, and moisture. Gel pads are perfect for everyday wear but can lift during intense efforts. For a complete comparison, read our glue vs. gel pads guide.
How to protect your nails during sports?
A few simple habits to preserve your nails during exercise:
- Wear sports gloves for weightlifting, CrossFit, and climbing
- Avoid gripping equipment too tightly — too tight a grip creates friction on the sides of the nails
- Dry your hands after each sports session to prevent moisture from seeping under the nails
- Check the edges of your nails after each session — if an edge starts to lift, re-glue immediately with a drop of glue
- Choose a style adapted to your main activity — no need to sacrifice style for practicality
What to do if a nail comes off during sports?
This can happen, especially during intensive activities. Here's how to react:
- Gently remove the nail if it's half-lifted — don't let it come off completely on its own, you risk snagging it somewhere
- Keep the nail — it can be re-glued
- Clean your natural nail and re-glue after your session once your hands are dry
- Always carry your tube of glue in your gym bag

Are press-on nails allowed in sports competitions?
This depends on the sport and the level of competition. In most sports, press-on nails are not explicitly prohibited, but some federations impose rules on nail length for safety reasons — particularly in contact sports, synchronized swimming, or volleyball. Always check your federation's regulations before a competition.
